Vehicles in Kenya

On my prior trips, we have been in 6 passenger Land Cruisers, with open tops.  This allowed us to get up close and personal to the wildlife.  I am considering a return this summer, but am concerned by the description of the safari vehicle, which seems more like a bus than a Land Cruiser.  I don't think, based on past experience, that I would particularly like the bus.....

Anyone able to offer a report on what type of vehicle is used?

the vehicles will either be landcruiser/landrover type 4x4's   or something like a toyota hi ace mini bus, also 4x4.  these seat a max of 8 people. (no different to the landcruisers in seating arrangement)  all of them have a push up roof so you can poke your head out and take photo's.

if you are talking about a purpose build overland safari vehicle, these seat 20 people and you will be on it for the whole of your trip, unless the trip notes state otherwise.   these have big windows that open half way, the good thing is that you have a hight advantage over smaller 4x4's, which is great for photo's

Thanks, but I am confused by your answer.  Is it the landcruiser or the overland?  Big difference between the two when negotiating the Mara, Amboseli and Samburu.......

if you are going to mara, amboseli and/or samburu, then it will be in the landcruiser or hi ace minibus type 4x4.    mara and samburu are better suited to smaller vehicles, as there are a lot of very narrow paths that the bigger truck cant get down.

all parks are fab, but samburu wins for me

I have the same concerns as Upchucked, as my previous experience in Botswana was in open top and sided Landcruisers.   The views are tremendous as you are on the same level as the animals rather than elevated from them or looking through a window.  From what I have read and seen pictures of, the vehicles in the Serengeti and Masai Mara are enclosed, I think maybe because of local regulations.  In Luangwa (Zambia) and the Selous I believe open sided vehicles are used. Also walking safaris!!

east african vehicles are enclosed, with a pop up roof, so you will have good viewing opportunities. most vehicles seat 8 people,  and every one will have a window seat, except for the one that gets the middle seat on the back row.  but all of you should be able to stand up and poke your heads/cameras out of the roof.
