The Ardeche region of southern France offers all the key elements for an active fitness week. The natural landscape of the imposing gorge and surrounding mountains offer trails and tracks a plenty for running, cycling and kayaking whilst we also have a brand new gym at our disposal for other targeted sessions. Given the area's reputation for glorious sunshine we aim to be outside for the majority of the time and run some of our fitness sessions in the beautiful grounds of the Ferme de Bournet, our home for the week. Under the guidance of our fitness professional this week can be a kickstart to fitness or a key component to achieving a specific goal. Good food is another given in France and the Ardeche is no exception, so whilst we will work hard, there are ample rewards, with all meals included.

Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Fly to Lyon

    On arrival at Lyon we transfer to our accommodation in Grospierres.

    Meals included: Dinner
  • Day 2

    Pre-breakfast abs class, mid-morning interval training session in the grounds; afternoon spin class.

    Our week begins in earnest with an early abs class. After breakfast we will head out into the grounds for an interval training session, aimed at improving strength and speed. We warm down with a stretching session before finding a nice spot for a healthy picnic lunch.

    The early afternoon gives us our first chance to explore this fabulous setting, walk the grounds or perhaps take a swim in the pool.

    We then transfer to the brand new gym in Joyeuse for a spin class. We have full access to the gym so should you wish you can forego the spin class and opt for a workout in the fully equipped fitness area.

  • Day 3

    Boxercise followed by a cycle ride in the local area, breaking for lunch and enjoying the beautiful scenery.

    We wake up to a boxercise class. To those new to the discipline this will be a great chance to see what all the fuss is about. Essentially this form of exercise uses training techniques employed by boxers to keep fit. Classes vary but can incorporate various concepts such as skipping and hitting pads, as well as press ups and sit ups.  Your leader will ensure any novices are given the proper instruction to allow each group member to gain maximum benefit.

     Mid-morning we will have a taste of cycling in the Ardeche. This is a hotbed of cycling and regularly plays host to the Tour de France. It offers a myriad of options and challenges. The basis for the ride is a local loop using the back roads to wind up to Maison Neuve. Depending on the fitness and speed of the group the leader may choose to adjust the route, lengthening or shortening as necessary. The route is mostly flat with a few short hills to add to the challenge. We can expect to cycle approx 40km.

    Lunch will be taken in the vicinity of the medieval village of Ruoms.

    We then cycle back to the Ferme de Bournet along the ‘Voie Verte’. This is a newly converted cycle path following what once was a railway line, and offers riders some lovely scenery.

    We should arrive back mid-afternoon. For those looking for an extra challenge and happy to carry on unguided, there is the option of cycling via Sampzon, adding an extra climb as well as the rewarding views.

     

    Once back we will set a time for a late afternoon stretch class, to aid recovery.

    Before dinner we will partake in a wine tasting, sampling the wine produced from the de Bournet vineyards

  • Day 4

    To Villefort Lake for trail run, hill walk and beach.

    We transfer (approx. 50 mins) up to Villefort Lake up in the Cevennes mountains. We begin with a 5km trail run in the surrounding area. The terrain will be varied however normal running shoes will be suitable. After lunch we will head off for a longer walk (around 6km) to really explore the area. We finish with free time on the lake, where there is a great beach to relax or go for a swim.

  • Day 5

    Mid-morning circuit training in the grounds of the chateau; afternoon transfer for kayak down the gorge; river swim and BBQ on the riverbank.

    We make use of our fantastic location by enjoying a circuit training session in the grounds mid-morning. Circuit training  is a form of body conditioning sometimes called resistance training or high intensity aerobics targetting, in our case, muscular endurance. Examples include press ups and kettle bell exercises for the upper body and shuttle runs and squats for the lower body.  

    After a suitable recovery time we transfer to the Ardeche Gorge. This is what the region is most known for, so a visit here wouldn’t be complete without taking to the water. Paddling down the Ardeche River surrounded by the imposing cliffs combines an effective workout with a chance to sample this wonderful environment. We finish by passing under the 50 metre high rock arch known as ‘le Pont d’Arc’ before leaving the water to enjoy an early evening barbeque at a local campsite on the riverbank with the chance for further swimming.

  • Day 6

    Morning boxercise; transfer along the gorge to St. Martin for lunch; afternoon optional paddle board or swim; return for a pre-dinner run.

    Our second boxercise session should see us push up the intensity and really kick start our day. We then transfer along the gorge to the town of St Martin where we can enjoy optional paddle boarding or swimming, before returning for a pre-dinner run in the grounds. The length and intensity of the run will depend on the group's progress.

  • Day 7

    Early morning abs class; afternoon 2-3hr walk; evening class in the chateau grounds.

    We begin with a short sharp abs class before transferring to the Chassezac Gorge. Here we explore the terrain and enjoy the wonderful views as we take a 2-3hr walk. Regular walking trainers will suffice though there will be some uneven ground and a few inclines as we are in the mountains. Thanks to our proximity to the river, a quick dip to cool off is certainly not out of the question. We then return to the chateau grounds for a class. The content and intensity of this will be set depending upon the group's progress throughout the week. There is also the option of gym time for those that wish.

Like many regions of France, the Ardeche has a host of traditional ingredients and dishes. 

The restaurant on site is run by chef Jeremy Tanfin who has worked in numerous quality restaurants in Paris and throughout France. A devotee of local produce, the meals reflect his desire to showcase the best of Ardechois cuisine.
Breakfasts and evening meals are taken here. Breakfasts are typically continental, including coffee, bread and croissants, as well as some cold meats, fruit and cheese.

Lunches are taken as picnics and aim to be light yet filling to allow us to refuel for the afternoon. The location of these will vary depending on our itinerary on any given day.
Evening meals will be 3 courses and focus predominantly on local cuisine as mentioned above. 

Weather

The Ardeche enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate with ample sunshine throughout the year. The famous Mistral wind prevents temperatures from getting too high in summer with mid to high twenties being the norm from June to September.

Activity Level: 4 (Moderate/Challenging)

This Moderate/Challenging week is for anyone looking to improve or maintain their fitness with a week of fun and carefully tailored fitness activities. You must already have a base level fitness (as a guide you should ideally be able to run a 5km distance under 35 minutes or go to the gym/cycle 2-3 times per week). Throughout the week you will be concentrating on strengthening and cardio with the objective of returning home feeling fitter and healthier. All activities are optional.

Although we have given a detailed itinerary please note that the running order of activities may be altered giving the leader the opportunity to ensure the best itinerary is offered and fits with local weather/events.

Accommodation

La Ferme de Bournet

The hotel itself is a converted 14th century farm and shares its massive grounds with the château which it originally served. Overall the Domaine de Bournet also comprises a golf course and winery, all still run today by the de Bournet family who first took over the land in the 16th century. 

The farmhouse was converted to offer simple but authentic twin rooms with en suite facilities. There is a pool on the grounds as well as a fantastic restaurant with high vaulted ceilings, and a courtyard area perfect for enjoying a coffee.

This is a real gem and offers  good service, tranquillity and genuine charm.

An overview of flight options

Exodus is committed to making joining our tours as easy as possible, wherever you live. We generally only block book seats from London, but this certainly does not mean that you need to fly from there. Depending on the route and airlines available, there will usually be various options available for those who want to fly from their local airport.

This page aims to provide a useful overview of the options available to our clients. However, the best flight arrangements should be tailored to your personal requirements, so please contact our Sales team for expert advice.

 

What kind of options do I have ?

1. We can book for you: Flights from anywhere in the world - not via London  

Depending on the route, this may be direct or via an overseas hub like Amsterdam, the Middle East or elsewhere. On short haul routes there may be direct flights with low cost airlines, charter flights or scheduled airlines. Exodus can book most, but not all, of these for you. The most appropriate airline may be different to that which we use for the group flight from London, but many people now travel on different airlines and meet up with their fellow passengers at the destination.

Pros Cons
  • May be the most direct route
  • Often the extra fare compared to the London flight is minimal.
  • As you will be in the hands a single airline for your entire journey, the airline will be responsible for your bags and your connections.
  • You may not be able to join the group transfers. However, we can usually arrange private transfers, or book your flights to try and coincide with the group transfers. See notes on transfer arrangements below.

 

2. We can book for you: Connecting flights from your local airport to London

Exodus can book connecting flights to London so you can join the group flight there. Connecting times will be followed according to airline advice, or as requested by clients. There are two types of fares we can use for this option: a 'through-fare' or a 'published fare'.
 
a) A 'through-fare' is where you will be in the main airline's care throughout. You change planes, but your bags are checked all the way through to your final destination. 

b) A 'published fare' ticket is completely seperate from your onward ticket from London. It is usually cheaper than a through-fare but will need to be paid for and issued as soon as it is booked. This can be a problem if your tour has not yet reached minimum numbers. On 'published fares' neither airline is aware that you have connecting flights, so Exodus is responsible for timing your connection, not the airlines involved. The tickets are also usually non changeable and non refundable.

Pros Cons
  • Depending on the fare type, Exodus or the airline is responsible for flight connections.
  • Through fare tickets can be expensive.
  • On a published fare, tickets must be issued immediately; tickets on published fares can be very difficult to change if onward flight times change; bags are not checked though to your final destination.
  • Published fares are non-refundable.

 

3. Booking some or all of the flights yourself

You can also book connecting air travel yourself, either to London, or all the way to the start point. There may be certain airlines or routes we don't have access to, so this is always an option. However, if you make your own travel arrangements you become liable for any delays, cancellations or missed connections, and Exodus is not required to offer refunds if you have trouble reaching the start of your trip.

Pros Cons
  • You might find cheaper fares, or routes not available to Exodus.
  • You are responsible for any delays or missed connections, and the cost of the tour is not protected should you miss your flight be cancelled.

 

 Notes on transfer arrangements

Sometimes it is possible to travel on a different airline to the group flight from London. Where this is the case, we need to think about ensuring you meet up with the group with minimum extra cost and hassle.

  • On certain trips, it is easy to arrive on a different flight and still meet the group at the hotel with time in hand. We can usually arrange private transfers (at extra cost) or offer advice on taking a taxi to the start hotel.
  • On other trips (especially in Europe), the transfer meets the group flight and then travels some distance to the first night's accommodation. Where this is the case, our Sales team will try to arrange flights that arrive before (and depart after) the group. However, we do have to make it clear in your final documentation that if your flights are delayed, the transfer cannot wait for you. While Exodus or our local operators will do what we can to help you reach the start point of the tour, any additional costs must be paid by the client.
