    cycling Canad du Midi

beautiful scenery cycling along the Canal du Midi and through archetypal French villages and vineyards.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

it was lovely stopping at a vineyard mid ride and sampling the local produce.

What did you think of your group leader?

Philippe was very diligent and attentive. He had to cope with quite a lot as he was the only guide/leader/translator etc.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The riding pace was very slow - which I knew it would be from the trip description. So if you want to go anywhere remotely above crawling pace this is not the cycling trip for you. I almost felt trance like cycling along the canal it was so slow and was worried about falling in! Interestingly everyone was more excited and spirited when we left the canal and rode on undulating roads. the canal paths are narrow and very uneven in places which was fine but you have to concentrate. The bikes (mountain/hybrid?) were suitable for this sort of riding.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I was quite surprised to be presented with a "woman's" bike at the start of the trip - this has never happened before. I think the guide was surprised and asked if I'd ever ridden a "man's" bike! I've never ridden a "women's" bike before! The bikes, especially the female versions were huge and ridiculously heavy and because of the design couldn't even hold a proper bottle cage. In Exodus' defence they did get me a man's bike (ie normal bike with cross bar!) for the 2nd day of riding. The guide was very good at sorting this out promptly.

    A Lovely Holiday

This was our first time cycling in France and Quinten our tour leader made sure every aspect of the holiday was taken care of. Unlike Italy where there are usually plenty of cafes for drink and snack stops, there wasn't on this route in France so Quinten supplied supplied great French picnics everyday, a real treat.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

There were many inspirational moments like Carcassonne itself, the beauty of the Canal du Midi and the excellent vineyard tour.

What did you think of your group leader?

Excellent, Quinten couldn't do enough for you, including those legendary picnics. Quinten also owned the bikes so he made sure everything was working ok. Also booked great restaurants every night for all of us.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Whilst the overall terrain was relatively flat with a few undulations the condition of the Canal du Midi is quite poor so technically you have to be confident at cycling over rough ground at times, tree roots and ruts etc.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

A great holiday, I recommend it.
