trans siberian

anyone booked on the trans siberian railway trip - moscow - beijing in september and is thinking of doing the st petersburg trip before hand?

Hi - I'm just doing the trip from Moscow. Just not enough time! But everyone tells me St Petersburg would be a highlight.

HI. I'm also just doing the trip from Moscow but wish I had booked the extra couple of days. I have been in St Petersburg before and it was was amazing. Look forward to meeting you Sue, and whoever Anon is!

You too Maggie! It's nice to hear from you. I'm travelling alone. Just heard my Mongolia visa has come through. Still need to sort out China. See you at Heathrow on 3rd September!

Visas are are nightmare. Fingers crossed getting mongolian + russian monday. Chinese one is really hard- having to go through travcore !!- not happy. Wish I had had more info re them - oh well - hopefully see you both on 3rd. I , too am on own- I'll be the old lady that's looking completely lost- look out for me at Heathrow!

Hi Dayl, I agree. I ended up using Travcour for China because I live in Aberdeen, and it was getting too complicated to do it myself. I sent my papers down yesterday and already got an email confirming that they have received them, so they're pretty efficient. Hadn't appreciated quite how much they were going to cost, but am sure will be worth it in the end. Hope you got your Russia and Mongolia ones sorted.

I am about to complete the form for the China visa and intend posting it to Manchester (where I live but am away from til 26 August) I hope this will work! Dayl - was your difficulty that you lived too far away from one of the centres to do it in person? I have the other visas and hope you both do too by now.

Just got my passport back with the China visa, so now all complete. Ordered the lonely planet guide book too and read the section about life on board the train - made me look forward to the trip even more. Hope things are working out well for you both too Maggie and Dayl.....Sue

got the mongolian + russian visas awaiting chinese- live 45 mins from b'ham so have been 'practising' train journeys up + down to london. Got the lonely planet yesterday - bedtime reading. Yes only 3 weeks or so to go- getting very excited now. are you taking small amount of cash + using atms? Not sure how much to take. send me your thoughts.

Hi dayl - yes, taking some roubles (hard to know how much, thinking 200 quid??) and a small amount of yuan....couldn't get any mongolian currency from my bank, so will probably take some dollars too...and then taking credit card with me. Got the email about the slight change in plans today. Sorry to have less time in Mongolia, but really just excited about the whole trip.

Hi Sue, Dayl and Maggie. Just to introduce ourselves Pam and Philip who will be joining on this trip. I agree it has been a bit of a trial to get the visas but all now done and ready to meet you all at Heathrow on the 3rd.

Hello Pam and Philip - see you there! Am now beginning to pack, makes it all seem very real. Trying to decide what books to take....And to persuade one of my kids to lend me a camera :-).

Hi all - we have sort of been introduced to 5 of us . I was told there were 8 on the trip. Yep my spare bed is covered with items- do I really need this pile, should I take this or this? Packets of pasta from Asda etc- am getting mega excited. keep looking at weather in Moscow/ Beijing- am actually quite pleased we have an extra day in Beijing. am awaiting to see what if anything has been arranged.
